Tirta Empul ist ein Wassertempel im Dorf Tampak Siring, Bezirk Gianyar, gegründet um das Jahr 960. Das Datum und die Tempelgeschichte sind in einem alten balinesischen Lontarbuch, den Usana Bali, niedergelegt.

Einst herrschte ein „heiliger“ König namens Mayadenawa in dieser Region Balis. Da er hochmütig war und seine Untertanen schlecht behandelte, entschloss sich Gott Indra einzugreifen und schickte seine göttlichen Truppen in Menschengestalt. König Mayadenawa bekam Wind von dem Angriff und flüchtete in den Wald. Zuvor hatte er jedoch eine vergiftete Quelle erschaffen, um die Truppe des göttlichen Heers zu töten. Tatsächlich tranken einige göttliche Krieger in Menschengestalt aus dieser Quelle und starben.

Erbost beobachtete Gott Indra das Geschehen. Er kam persönlich zum Kampfplatz und erschuf eine zweite Quelle mit heilenden Kräften. Als die Leichname mit dem Wasser in Kontakt kamen, erwachten sie wieder zum Leben. Auch König Mayadenawa konnte überwältigt werden.

Die Quelle, die Gott Indra geschaffen hatte, ist die heilige Quelle Tirta Empul. Das Quellwasser im Tempel spendet den Menschen Heilung, die dem heiligen Ort vertrauen.

Diese Quelle bewässert auch viele Reisfelder durch das balinesische Irrigationssystem, das es ermöglicht, das natürliche Wasser in den bewirtschafteten Nutzflächen zu verteilen.

Es gibt eine Vielzahl an steinernen Wasserausläufen, durch die das Wasser in die beiden Becken plätschert. Die Menschen gehen in Tempelbekleidung ins Wasser und beten an fast jedem Auslauf. Das ist das Reinigungsritual.
Einige Ausläufe haben spezielle Funktionen und sollten nicht verwendet werden. Ich frage immer nochmal einen der anwesenden Priester, welche Ausläufe zu überspringen sind.
Danach beten die Balinesen in dem Tempelbereich, der etwas erhöht über den beiden Wasserbecken gelegen ist. Dieser Ort ist für Touristen nicht zugänglich. Besucher, die dort beten wollen, müssen traditionelle Tempelbekleidung (Adat Bali) tragen; Nicht-Balinesen benötigen Begleitung von Balinesen.

Tirta Empul ist ein wichtiger Ort für gläubige Balinesen. Menschen jeder Religion, die Heilung suchen, können dort ebenfalls entsprechend gekleidet Heilung von physischen und psychischen Beschwerden suchen.
Vollmond und Neumond sind glückverheißende Tage auf Bali, an denen sich viele Balinesen in Tirta Empul reinigen.

Ich war bereits mehrmals in Tirta Empul, um Heilung zu suchen. Oft bat ich um Heilung von dem Festhalten an meiner Vergangenheit. Ich bin guter Gesundheit, sonst hätte ich sicher darum gebeten.
Bisher war ich immer mit einem Priester dort, der auch die passenden Opfergaben mitbrachte.
Ich habe immer zwei Sets Tempelbekleidung dabei, damit ich mich nach dem Reinigungsritual umziehen kann. In voller Bekleidung, Adat Bali, begeben wir uns in das Wasserbassin. An jedem Wasserauslauf, bete ich, beuge mich drei Mal unter den Wasserstrahl und trinke drei Mal einen Schluck des Quellwassers aus dem Wasserauslauf. Nach dem Umziehen in den Umkleideräumen, beten wir im höher gelegenen Tempel der Tempelanlage.
Das Gemälde entstand aus meinem Gefühl der Dankbarkeit für diesen Ort und der Erfahrung, gesegnet und gestärkt zu werden.
